Robot bartender movie8/3/2023 He feels guilty, but not so much that he'll come clean: He's so happy to have found his true love that he doesn't want to break the spell. But as a romance begins to develop, Jim (and the audience) knows their relationship is built on a cruel lie. She's clearly a livelier, brighter person than he is, which is emphasized by the fact that she's been given a more elite clearance on the Avalon than he was. Passengers is at its best right after Aurora is awakened and the two start to get to know one another. But, still, could Jim really do that to another person? Because Pratt is such a likable presence-and because Jim has been stranded on the Avalon alone for a year-we understand why he'd start to lose his mind. Jim recognizes what a despicable act this would be-he's essentially dooming her to a life stuck on the ship in the midst of deep space-and initially director Morten Tyldum ( The Imitation Game) and screenwriter Jon Spaihts (who worked on Doctor Strange and Prometheus) walk a delicate line on this hugely troubling ethical quandary. He becomes more convinced that he should do the unthinkable: deactivate her hibernation pod and pretend that it malfunctioned like his did. Learning more about Aurora from video interviews she gave before their journey, Jim discovers that she's a charming, funny, intelligent journalist. It's then that he stumbles across the pod occupied by Aurora (Jennifer Lawrence), whose beauty bewitches him. But the endless freedom eventually drives him a bit batty, prompting him to seek a break from the solitude. It's like an interstellar luxury hotel/entertainment complex, and Jim revels in his ability to do whatever he wants. The Avalon offers plenty of shopping, restaurants and other amenities. The prospect of living out the rest of his life alone is, at first, exciting. His only companion, Arthur (Michael Sheen), is a robot bartender. Freaked out and confused, Jim can't contact anyone to let them know that he's been awakened. Like everyone else, he's in suspended animation for the ship's 120-year journey from Earth to the colony planet Homestead II-except he has the great misfortune of waking up 90 years too early when his hibernation pod malfunctions. Set in an unspecified future, the movie stars Chris Pratt as Jim, an engineer onboard the Starship Avalon. As dark and troubling as Passengers can be, the filmmakers pull back from the upsetting implications of their story to ensure a feel-good message-which proves disastrous. While those movies put their aspirations above any concerns about catering to an audience, this film's laudable ambitions are ultimately overwhelmed by its timidity. This star-powered sci-fi romantic drama puts forth a compelling premise and its style consciously calls to mind past classics, invoking films like 2001, Solaris, and Wall-E. A great movie lurks within the bowels of Passengers.
